Vibes is a serialized supernatural comedy divided into cases. Each can be read independently. New chapters come out every week, but between each case I publish supplemental material like this. If you’d like to find all of it all in one place, click the button below for the table of contents.
Last week I wrapped up Case Three, Mindbreakers of Glendale, and before I start on Case Four next week, I want to bring you something special. If you’ve been reading along from the start you’ll know that Vibes Detective’s Agency would be nothing without artist Diogo Hausen (read my interview with him here). These stories had an original audience of just him, with no plan to exist anywhere but on my hard drive (I had no idea what Substack even was when I wrote these— stoned and covid lockdown stir crazy— back in 2022).
Diogo wanted more.
I won’t go into what he brings to the table artistically, because I already did that (again, read the interview), but I will say that he wanted to see this as a comic book, and so, in classic Hausen fashion, he taught himself how to make one.
Below is our first attempt to take this world outside the realm of my (somewhat dense and a little affected) prose and turn it into something not just based on Diogo and my friendship, but made by it.
This was intended as a pitch to turn the series into a run of graphic novels, and who knows, maybe one day—after we’re done with the low budget feature—we’ll try again. Because of its pace and level of spiritual nonsense and action, we chose to do the first chapter of Case Three. If you’ve read it, leave a comment about how you think it translates. And if you’re curious, at the very bottom I’ve included the ‘pitch’ part of this as well.
Thanks for reading! If you want to stay up to date with the series, subscribe.
If you liked this and want to see more of Diogo’s work, check him out on Youtube. If you had fun, leave a comment so I don’t feel so alone in this cold world.
Below, if you’re still curious, is the pitch portion.
This is SO funny and joy-tastic in the face of cosmic horror. It’s SUCH a V…i…Be and meets the moment. Overthinker here, so I can relate to how they process in the face of fast-paced action.
I once took myself out of a paintball game after being shot in the pinky finger because it “technically” meant I was hit but not after thinking about for ten minutes.
Nice work, and (holy moly), Diego has some drawing chops. Awesome color palette choice too.
A cool pitch format. 😎
Cheers!
